How to Pronounce CH and J in English (tʃ vs dʒ)
CH (tʃ), as in cheap and chocolate, and J (dʒ), as in jeep and job, are sister sounds. They are shaped the same way in the mouth—the only difference is voicing. CH is unvoiced. J adds vocal cord vibration.
Both sounds begin with a stop in airflow, followed by a release. When voicing is added, cheap becomes jeep, chin becomes gin, and choke becomes joke. Learning to control that vibration is key to keeping these sounds distinct.
At the end of words, the difference becomes more subtle. In pairs like batch and badge, the vowel before J becomes longer. That vowel length is what helps listeners hear the distinction.
