Discover how to pronounce both English L sounds, Light L and Dark (Final) L. Learn tongue placement, airflow, and key pronunciation tips to make your /l/ sound clear and natural.

Where is the sound made?

  • The tip of your tongue lifts and taps the bumpy ridge right behind your top front teeth (the alveolar ridge). It makes a quick press and release movement.
  • The sides of your tongue stay down and relaxed so air can flow around them.

How does the air flow?

  • The /l/ sound is continuous—the air keeps moving as you make it.
  • /l/ is a Bridge consonant because it’s somewhere between a vowel and a consonant. Unlike stop consonants, it doesn’t block the airflow. Instead, it flows smoothly around the tongue.

Do I use my voice?

  • Yes. /l/ is a voiced sound, so your vocal cords vibrate when you say it.

Substitution with /r/: Many learners replace /l/ with /r/, especially at the beginning of words (e.g., light → right). This happens because the tongue positions are similar but not the same.

Substitution with /n/: Some learners substitute /l/ with /n/, since both sounds are made with the tongue tip touching the alveolar ridge. But with /n/, air goes through the nose, while with /l/, air flows around the sides of the tongue.

Clusters: /l/ is often dropped or changed in clusters , when it appears with another consonant, as in flight, play, or clear. Learners may simplify the cluster by removing /l/ or replacing it with /r/.

At the end of words: /l/ is often dropped or substituted with /r/ at then end of words.

Light L Training

The following exercises combine listening, shadowing, and gradually increasing complexity to help you internalize new sounds and rhythm patterns in your spoken English.

Level 1 is available to all visitors. CEA members unlock the complete training.

Goal: Hear and produce the Light /l/ sound clearly in at the beginning of words and syllables.

1) Say each word slowly and clearly.

  • Focus on lifting the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top front teeth and keeping the sides of your tongue relaxed.

2) Record yourself the listen back:

  • Does your /l/ sound clear and distinct?
  • Are you avoiding substitutions like /r/ or /n/?

Mini Challenge: “Flood” the words in each column (say all of one column in a row). Can you keep the /l/ sound consistent from top to bottom?
