If you’ve studied the Color Vowel® Chart closely, you may have noticed AUBURN DOG tucked near OLIVE SOCK. AUBURN DOG is a regional vowel sound in American English. In some parts of the U.S.—especially the Midwest—you’ll hear words like law, talk, and bought with the AUBURN sound. In other regions, those same words are pronounced with OLIVE SOCK instead.

Both pronunciations are correct, and choosing AUBURN or OLIVE does not affect clarity.The sounds are closely related, which is why the Color Vowel® Chart places a gray line between them. This lesson isn’t about fixing a sound, it’s about noticing variation and building flexibility.
